Bandwidth
How much data is sent to and from hosting server to a visitor's web browsers
Blog
A contraction of the words weB LOG. A blog, or web journal, can by itself be a website.
Browser
software used to access and present information items like web pages, on the Internet. Examples of browsers are Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome.
CMS
Content Management System allows publishing, editing and modifying content of a website
Cookie
small piece of data that holds information about a website and used by an internet browser. They may contain login information for a website or hold registration content for a shopping cart.
CSS
Cascading style sheet is a markup language that helps display the look and formatting of a website. A CSS may determine that the body fonts are all Times New Roman font and that titles on a page would always display in an Arial font as well as the color of those fonts.
DNS
Domain Name Server converts a website's domain name to an IP number. For example the domain name SiteDart.net equals the IP # 64.85.177.68. That number refers to a space on a webserver where the website files are stored. The Domain name server is the hardware the makes the transition between name and number.
Domain Name
This is the address of your website. For instance, instead of referring people to the IP address associated with your website, as in "Visit my website at 64.85.177.68." you can instead say, "visit my website at SiteDart.net"
FAQ
Frequently asked questions that help users of a website or business to answer their own questions. This list of question a business hears from customers regularly and the answers they supply are usually placed on a website page titled the same.
Firewall
A security barrier consisting of software and hardware to prevent unauthorized communications between computer networks.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol allows a person to login to a remote hosting web space and transfer web files from their computer to a remote website host.
GIF
Graphical Interchange Format, this is a common type of image file used on a website. It works best for images that contain large areas of the same color and is often a smaller file and not as sharp than if the same file was a JPEG format. Works best with line art or simple logo art.
Hosting
Physical location for the storage of website files on a server connected to the Internet.
HTML
Hyper text markup language - the programming language in which web pages are written.
HTTP vs HTTPS
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol vs Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secured - Provides a standard for browsers to request and transmit files. And HTTPS is the same but is secured.
Hyperlink
Graphic or piece of text that links to another spot on the page, a separate page, or another website
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group is the common format for images files. Preferred format for images of photography, and gradients.
Keyword
A word or phrase that describes content of a website. A keyword is used on a website to help their content be relevant to a search by a potential customer in a search engine.
Landing Page
Any webpage on a website where traffic is sent specifically to prompt a certain action or result.
Meta Tag
Meta tag elements of a website like meta title tag or a meta description tag include keyword information about a website's content. The meta tag elements are normally not visible to the website's visitor.
PDF
Portable Document Format is a file format that allows for viewing and printing of a document and all its formatting regardless of operating systems or application software.
PNG
Portable Network Graphics is specifically designed for the Internet. It enables compression of graphic images with loss of quality. With PNG you can create a graphic that has transparency capabilities.
RSS
Rich Site Summary is a protocol used for publishing sharing content and syndication automatically. It is most common with the content of blogs.
Search Engine
a web based software used to search the content of the Internet and deliver it in a useable solution.
SEO
Search engine optimization is the process of building a website so that is favored and ranked as high as possible by search engines for specific keyword content.
SSL
Secure socket layer a protocol that allows the encryption of information across the internet for security.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator is also known as a domain name or the web address of a website
Wi-Fi
Wireless Fidelity is a technology allowing an electronic device to exchange data on the Internet using radio waves rather than wires.
